At West Faversham Community Association (WFCA), we recognise the strong connection between environmental sustainability, health, and community wellbeing.

Our approach brings together nature, food, and community action to support healthier lifestyles, reduce waste, and build environmental awareness—particularly among children and young people.

We embed sustainability across all of our work, ensuring that environmental action is practical, accessible, and rooted in everyday life.

NATURE, LEARNING & THE INVICTA BUMBLE BEES

Our Invicta Bumble Bees programme places nature at the heart of children’s development.

Through hands-on, engaging activities, children are supported to build a connection to the natural world while developing confidence, curiosity, and healthy habits.

Activities include:

· Nature-based play and outdoor exploration

· Growing fruit, vegetables, and plants

· Learning about wildlife and ecosystems

· “Garden to fork” cooking and healthy eating

· Environmental awareness and responsibility

By giving children regular access to nature, we help them develop a lasting understanding of how to care for the environment, while also improving their physical and mental wellbeing.

The programme is particularly focused on ensuring that children from low-income families have access to nature-based experiences that they may not otherwise receive.

Food, Waste & Community Action

We take a practical, community-led approach to tackling both food insecurity and environmental waste.

Community Fridge

Our community fridge redistributes surplus food that would otherwise go to landfill, making it freely available to local residents.

Each week, we redistribute over 1,800kg of food, delivering both environmental and social impact.

This work:

· Prevents large volumes of food waste

· Reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with landfill

· Supports individuals and families experiencing financial pressure

· Increases access to fresh and nutritious food

Food, Health and Learning

Alongside food redistribution, we promote healthier lifestyles through:

· Low-cost meals through our café

· Cooking and nutrition learning opportunities

· Children’s activities focused on food growing and preparation

Through programmes such as Bumble Bees, children learn where food comes from and how to prepare it, helping to build lifelong healthy and sustainable habits.

GOING BEYOND NET ZERO

We are committed not only to reducing our environmental impact, but to going further—actively working towards a carbon negative approach through our operations.

Carbon Reduction in Practice

Our environmental impact is driven by a combination of waste reduction, renewable energy, and sustainable operations:

· Food Waste Reduction: Redistributing over 1,800kg of food per week significantly reduces emissions that would otherwise be generated through landfill.

· Renewable Energy: Our building is supported by a large solar array and battery storage system, reducing reliance on grid electricity and lowering our carbon footprint.

· Sustainable Transport: We operate an all-electric van to collect food donations and transport equipment, reducing emissions from our day-to-day operations.

A Carbon Negative Approach

By combining large-scale food redistribution with renewable energy generation and low-emission transport, we are working beyond net zero—actively offsetting more carbon than we produce through key areas of our operation.

This ensures that our environmental work is not only aspirational, but grounded in tangible, measurable impact.

Why This Matters

We believe that environmental sustainability and community wellbeing go hand in hand.

By combining environmental action with social impact, we are able to:

· Support healthier, more resilient communities

· Reduce inequalities in access to nature and healthy food

· Empower children and young people to care for the environment

· Deliver meaningful, long-term environmental change at a local level
